The African Outpost was a $3.2 million, two-phase project which opened in September 1998 at the Louisville Zoological
Gardens. This project was comprised of three primary components: an 8,000 s.f. themed restaurant, a Meerkat/Mole Rat
exhibit and a themed animal contact area called "Boma Village".
The African themed restaurant includes African wood and thatch construction and an outdoor dining area with great vistas
throughout the zoo. The Meerkat/Molerat Exhibit showcases these two diverse animals in their native habitats. Meerkats
enjoy an outdoor exhibit that allows them freedom of movement and prime viewing opportunities for Zoo patrons. The
African Boma Village allows human-contact with the animals and other African cultural experiences.
