The Jefferson County Replacement Facility , Kentucky Children’s Home is a new facility replacing 3 outdated juvenile
facilities located in Louisville, Kentucky. The 56,800 square foot facility will service the entire Commonwealth of
Kentucky for the treatment of severely emotionally disturbed, special needs and transitional children.
The 80-bed facility is divided into five distinct parts: 1) a self-contained special needs diagnostic unit for 10 children;
2) a 30-bed facility (3 groups of 10) for severely emotionally disturbed children; 3) a 40-bed (4 groups of 10) for
transitional, delinquent or rehabilitated youth; 4) an administrative unit; 5) an educational wing meeting Kentucky
Department of Education’s criteria for the education of the youth. Space is also provided for the youth workers and
counselors, treatment specialist, medical examinations, laundry, dining and kitchen space, and exterior vocational shop
building space.
The facility does not utilize a typical security system. This was done to avoid adverse reaction by both the residents
and the residential community the facility is located in. A staff secure environment provides the necessary security for
the facility.
It is an entirely masonry structure with masonry load bearing walls with a brick veneer. It is the 8th State of the Art
Juvenile Facility Godsey Associates has prepared design documents and construction oversight for the Kentucky Department
of Juvenile Justice.
