Phase I, Structural Stabilization of this project encompasses four buildings that remain on the site from the 1920’s. The
buildings have set vacant, open and unprotected for years, leading to sever deterioration. The work for the stabilization
phase includes new roofs, restoration of all exterior masonry walls, demolition of extraneous parts of the buildings,
cleaning of all masonry and cleaning and painting of all structural steel. All exterior openings will be temporarily
closed in to provide weather protection until the construction phase begins. The project is divided into seven bid
packages to allow smaller contract sizes to encourage participation by minority contractors.
The renovation phase of the project will convert the entire complex into a diverse cultural and multi-use facility.
There will be a Great Hall to accomodate large gatherings and special exhibits, a research center, studio space for fine
arts programs, retail shops and bookstores and a permanent exhibit on Louisville African American history.
The design provides a glass connector-lobby, which connects a new pavillion building to the other existing buildings on
site. The two story pavillion will house a major public lobby space, an auditorium and administrative offices.
