Godsey Associates Architects was selected to design the $63.55 million expansion for the Commonwealth Convention Center in
Louisville, Kentucky. The program requirements for the Commonwealth Convention Center Expansion called for 200,000 square
feet of continuous exhibit space, 80,000 square feet of meeting rooms and 30,000 square feet of ballroom space. To meet the
specifications of the initial design required closing Third Street. Due to traffic concerns, the decision was made to
extend the Exhibit Hall over Third Street. The result, which was substantiated by further economic impact studies, provides
146,000 square feet of exhibit space at the upper level, and 50,000 square feet at ground level. Meeting room space totals
72,000 square feet and the new ballroom, which opens to Fourth Avenue and Market Street, contains 30,000 square feet and is
able to be divided into three spaces.
Two 55' deep "Super Trusses" are exposed above the roof, spanning over 400' to support the roof structure of the
column-free exhibit hall. With the expansion, the existing center will be renovated to open up the existing box with
extensive new glass and some of the precast concrete will be covered with brick. The redesign will make the existing
facility more pedestrian user-friendly and will be more compatible with the urban fabric of downtown.
