The integrity of the Main-Market District is vitally important to the character of downtown Louisville. The insertion of a
new building into this area requires design sensitivity to the characteristics of the existing structures, contributions to
the atmosphere of activity and life that is desired by the community, and respect for new materials and methods of
construction. The primary palette of materials for the exterior consists of brick, colored precast or stone accents and
liberal use of glazing. For the actual structure of the garage, it was a foregone conclusion to use concrete but care was
taken to ensure that the layout of the garage kept the ramped surfaces relegated to the east, the least visible side. The
materials of brick and an accent material are heavily used in the buildings immediately adjacent to the site, as well as the
Humana and E-Main buildings across the street.
The most significant piece of the design that reflects modern material and method is the glass clock tower situated directly
on the northwest corner of the site. This clock tower contains the stair and elevators for the parking garage. The framing
patterns for the glazing were designed with care to be in harmony with the rest of the building and to avoid a monolithic
appearance. The tower extends above the main body of the building and is accentuated with a metal roof and tall marker.
The building will exist to primarily serve other buildings in its usage. The building design and appearance, however, will
significantly contribute to the look and atmosphere of the Main-Market District.
