The Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Facility is strategically located at the edge of the KyANG base, positioned to view the entire airfield. The two and one half story control room offers a view of 360 degrees, while soaring towards the airfield, and is shaped to emulate the aircraft it protects. The structure functions as a storage facility for firefighting apparatus, living and sleeping quarters for firefighters and administrative offices. The apparatus bays which house the firefighting vehicles offer state-of-the-art rapid refilling of the firefighting apparatus, electronic warning systems, and only the third installed system in the world of rapid release vehicle exhaust system. The elevated alarm/control room is interconnected to the entire Air Guard base as well as the airport and nearby air hub operations. The ARFF respond to civilian aircraft and buildings as well as serving their primary role with military aircraft and buildings. The apparatus bays open out in two directions to accommodate airside versus landside emergency responses.
